something about myself

i am known as “bill,” an artist outsider, who has recently establishing bill fraser gallery. my background is 45 years as a maker, masters in contemporary art, design and new media art histories. my abstracts, whether sculpture, painting, drawings or animations are about forest relations. i use string in my work to tether the universe to humanness. the painted chainsawn and shaped wooden abstract reliefs are inspired by affinities with trees and tactile surfaces. the scale is flexible; adapting to the context and experience of the viewer within space.
several of Canada’s Painters Eleven transformed the abstraction of nature into allegory perspectives on nature’s art. Piet Mondrian’s Cubist inspired Grey Tree, 1911, sees a dynamic world explored with abstracted perception. Bauhaus’ Paul Klee painted a Magic Square Series in 1914 and Kandinsky’s 1913 colour studies demonstrate infinite possibilities for art to share unconscious insight. since 2022, i am again using my chainsaw to draw on plywood. i find the work of Paterson Ewen’s Phenomascapes connected to my energy.
since 2021, after receiving a mid-career grant from the Ontario Arts Council, i have strived to return to large scale installations. i am open to commissions. my process-oriented passion is making art with nature in mind.
